The state of confusion

We got to Riley ER and GI and surgery teams were informed on our arrival. Surgery came and saw us, several different people (students, residents, felllows, attendings). They drew labs and did an abdomen X-ray. X-ray showed her small intestine swollen and angry and the labs showed a high white blood cell count. Surgery team decided that they think she has the start of a central line infection and said that she would be admitted for observation while the blood cultures come back and that they would start antibiotics. We never saw GI in the ER. We were admitted and got up to 9east (Laila’s favorite) and we were informed that she was now on GI’s service and they would be managing her case….. surgery team disappeared. GI finally came in and told us they don’t think it’s an infection but couldn’t explain the white cell count or the reason behind the vomiting and backed up ostomy. We’re playing the wait and see game. You could say I’m a bit frustrated.

So Laila seems to be doing much better. Her ostomy is working and the vomiting has stopped. But why did this happen? We are not feeding her through her GI system. There should be nothing backing it up and causing such a blockage that she vomits bile. GI says they don’t know and this may just be the way it is sometimes. Does anyone else find that unacceptable???

I’ve got a lot rattling around in my head today. I’m gonna try to write again tomorrow and let some of it out. Going to bed for now. Thanks for the prayers and praise God she seems to be doing better.

And of course she’s Laila and happy as always. Smiling and laughing and giving people a hard time. She is love.
