RJ’s surgery day

Thursday, July 28, 2016

RJ is all tucked in for the night because we have a very early morning for his implant surgery.

For those of you new followers, RJ has a prosthetic right eye which requires an implant under the flesh to help hold his prosthetic in place.

He had implant surgery three years ago and it shouldn’t have needed revised this soon, if ever, so we were referred to a plastic surgeon outside of Riley for this surgery. Yep, my kid was too complicated for Riley Children’s hospital.

Tomorrow they will remove his current implant (which is basically a silicone ball floating under the surface) and replace it with a bigger one. The interesting part is that this doctor will use a donor eye to encase the ball which has been proven to work better because it can actually be attached to the inside of the eye socket for more movement and better fit. Prosthetic eyes are completely amazing.

Sometimes I can’t believe the crazy medical knowledge I have now.

Please pray for RJ for his surgery. Last time he had this done the pain and nausea were so bad that he had to return the next day to be admitted :( Hopefully now that we know that, we can be more aggressive with higher pain and anti-nausea meds. Please also pray for him as school starts and he will not have his new prosthetic eye for probably the first six weeks of school. Pray the kids are kind to him about it. It can be pretty scary looking.

Please pray for me as well. I’m gonna be honest and say I am completely exhausted. And things will not slow down any time soon. Laila has important appointments and tests coming up as well as Emma’s eye surgery and everyone’s follow up appointments. RJ will also have to be fitted and have them create a new prosthetic once his socket heals. All of this is done two hours away in Indy.

Those self driving cars are looking pretty good to me…

Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
